ABBEY VILLA, PENZANCE

Abbey Villa has the comfortable, slightly quirky feel of a much-loved historic home. The rooms are light and welcoming, with traditional features and simple furnishings that suit the age and character of the house. Sleeping four, Abbey Villa is full of the charm you would hope to find in one of Penzance’s older homes. Traditional sash windows, exposed beams and original details sit alongside comfortable, relaxed interiors, while the sheltered garden is a real surprise in such a central location. At its edge, a sunny terrace looks directly over the harbour – a rather special place for breakfast in the morning or a glass of wine as the day draws to a close.

LOCATION

The harbour, promenade, galleries, independent shops, pubs and restaurants of Penzance are all within an easy stroll, while nearby Newlyn and Mousehole can be reached along the coast. It’s a lovely base for two couples or a small family wanting to experience West Cornwall with the sea quite literally on the doorstep.

Abbey Villa sits on Abbey Street, one of the oldest and most characterful parts of Penzance, tucked between the historic town centre and the harbour. Cobbled lanes, old granite walls and handsome period buildings give this little corner of town a wonderfully atmospheric feel.

From the house you can wander down to the waterfront in moments, stroll along the promenade towards Newlyn or head into the centre of Penzance for coffee, dinner or a browse around its independent shops and galleries. Chapel Street, with its historic buildings, pubs and restaurants, is also just around the corner.

For days further afield, Penzance is perfectly placed for exploring the far west. Mousehole, Marazion and St Michael’s Mount are close by, while the beaches of Sennen and Porthcurno, the Minack Theatre and the wild landscapes around Land’s End are all within easy reach.

LIVING

The sitting room is a cosy place to retreat after a day exploring, with a smart TV, a comfortable sofa and armchairs, books and a large sash window overlooking the garden. Next door, the separate dining room has space for four around the table and another lovely garden-facing window, making it just as suited to long breakfasts as relaxed suppers at home.Tucked away on the first floor and away from the main living space is a separate room with a desk with the most incredible view, offering a peaceful spot to catch up on a little work, pen a postcard or simply sit with a morning coffee and your journal. Whether you're answering a few emails or enjoying a quiet moment with a good book, it's a lovely space to retreat to during your stay.

COOKING & EATING

Take two steps into the traditional galley kitchen, which is particularly characterful, with exposed timber beams, slate flooring, a Belfast sink, wooden worktops and freestanding painted furniture. It feels refreshingly in keeping with the house rather than overly polished, and has everything needed for cooking during your stay including a gas oven and five ring hob, microwave and fridge freezer (located in the utility pantry are) 

SLEEPING

Upstairs are two comfortable bedrooms, each with its own individual character.

The first is a spacious, light-filled room with a super-king zip-and-link bed, giving you the flexibility of a super king or twin beds. Soft blue tones and simple coastal touches create a calm and restful space.

The second bedroom has a traditional feel, with a beautiful wooden bed, warm colours and another large sash window bringing in plenty of natural light.

BATHING

The family bathroom has a bath with shower over, while its large window gives you another unexpected glimpse over the garden and harbour – the sea is never very far from view at Abbey Villa.

OUTSIDE

The traditional walled garden is one of Abbey Villa’s loveliest surprises. Sheltered and sitting high above the harbour, it feels remarkably private considering you are in the heart of Penzance.

Mature shrubs, palms and established planting surround areas of lawn and winding paths, create a wonderfully green space in which to sit out and enjoy the Cornish sunshine.

There’s an outdoor table and chairs for four, with uninterrupted views across the boats, old harbour walls and Mount’s Bay beyond. Breakfasts can easily turn into long lunches here, and on a warm evening it’s difficult to imagine a better spot for opening a bottle of wine and watching life on the water below.

Perhaps the most memorable little room at Abbey is the garden room beside the water. Its broad windows frame the harbour below, making it a wonderful spot for morning coffee while watching fishing boats and yachts moving across the water.

USEFUL TO KNOW BEFORE BOOKING

• Abbey Villa is not suitable for anyone with limited mobility, babies or young children under 10 years old due to the steep staircase.
• Please note children of any age must be supervised by a responsible adult at all times if using the outside areas.

• If travelling later and arriving in the dark do familiarise yourself with the directions before leaving. 
• Abbey Villa is located in the heart of Penzance and it could be noisy at times, especially when local festivals are taking place, but this all adds to the charm. 
• Its very dog friendly and perfect for your four legged friend but the garden is not fully enclosed, so if yours is an escape artist you will need to watch them from wandering too far.
• Abbey Villa is located just off the road, so please take care when arriving and leaving and always supervise your four legged friend.
