BARLOWENA COTTAGE, GULVAL
Barlowena is a stylish two-bedroom cottage in the pretty village of Gulval, just outside Penzance. With countryside walks from the doorstep, the village pub within strolling distance and much of West Cornwall within easy reach, it’s a lovely base for couples and small families looking to explore this special corner of Cornwall.
Inside, Barlowena is a comfortable home, with thoughtfully styled interiors and everything you need for an easy stay. Spend the day exploring the coast before heading home to light the wood burner and settle in for a cosy evening, or leave the car behind and wander down to The Coldstreamer Inn for a drink.
It’s a cottage that works beautifully throughout the seasons, whether you’re here for summer days on the beach, long coastal walks or a quiet winter escape.
LOCATION
Gulval is a traditional Cornish village surrounded by countryside, yet only a five-minute drive from Penzance. At its heart is the historic 12th-century St Gulval Church, surrounded by period houses and pretty cottages, giving the village a wonderfully timeless feel.
Penzance is the gateway to the Land’s End peninsula and, from here, the best of West Cornwall is within easy reach. Head along the coast to the fishing harbour of Newlyn and pretty Mousehole, or in the opposite direction to Marazion and the iconic St Michael’s Mount.
Take the scenic back roads across to St Ives or hop on the picturesque branch line from St Erth. Sennen Cove, Porthcurno and the Minack Theatre are all an easy drive away, as are the dramatic landscapes and historic mining sites of the north coast.
Best of all, you don’t always need the car. There are lovely countryside walks straight from the village and The Coldstreamer Inn is just a stroll away.
LIVING
The stylish living room overlooks the front garden and has a relaxed, contemporary feel, with the wood burner at its heart. There’s a sofa and armchair for curling up with a book, watching a film or simply putting your feet up after a day exploring.
COOKING & EATING
The hallway leads through to a dining area with a table and four chairs and an accent wicker armchair. This in turn leads through to the charming kitchen with its wooden worktops and mosaic tiled floor. There is a fridge freezer, dishwasher, electric oven and hob and a microwave.
SLEEPING
There are two beautifully decorated bedrooms, both offering a calm and comfortable place to retreat at the end of the day.
The front-facing master bedroom has a king-size bed and freestanding wardrobe, while the second bedroom overlooks the rear and has a double bed.
BATHING
There’s a spacious family bathroom complete with a corner shower, freestanding bath, basin, and WC.
UTILITY AREA
Just off the kitchen is a useful lean-to utility area with a washing machine and access to the rear courtyard. It’s also a handy spot for storing wetsuits and beach gear after a day by the sea.
OUTSIDE
A south-facing lawned garden leads to the front door and there is an enclosed courtyard at the rear as well as an outside WC.
