LOCATION

Among all the pretty touristic towns and villages of West Cornwall, Newlyn feels the most authentic. It remains one of the biggest fishing fleets in the UK and as such gives a unique insight into a proper Cornish fishing port. You can buy fish and seafood straight from the boats, or from one of the many fishmongers. Its streets are quaint and have many old houses crammed down traffic free lanes, but it's the port that gives it its character. Newlyn is fantastic to visit at any time of year, but the August Bank Holiday Fish Festival is not to be missed. As is the New Year’s Eve fireworks at Mousehole.

Despite Newlyn retaining much of its original character the march of time is catching up and it’s becoming quite the destination. This is helped by a number of fabulous eateries including ‘Argoe’, perched by the slipway of Newlyn Harbour it is a relaxed restaurant with a laidback feel as dishes are served when they are ready. ‘The Tolcarne Inn’ with its Michelin starred chef and the amazing independent cinema ‘The Newlyn Filmhouse’. Developed from an old fish merchants store and partly funded by the Curzon group you could be forgiven for thinking you’re in central London with the fantastic bar and gorgeous interiors.

Travelling around, the impossibly quaint village of Mousehole is walking distance. It’s only a mile and a half away and a stunning walk along the coastal road. Alternatively, there is a bus stop by the St Peter’s Hill car park, where you can catch a bus to Mousehole or continue round to the lovely sandy beach of Sennen Cove. Mousehole has a number of highly regarded restaurants and cafés, while Marazion, St Ives, Penzance and Sennen are all well worth visiting and an easy drive away.

Newlyn has a strong artistic heritage. It is loved by artists and famed for its art. The Newlyn School was formed by Stanhope Forbes and Walter Langley who started the British plein air movement (paint outside) and included Henry Scott Tuke as well as others, many of whose works are in the Tate Britain collection.

WHAT GUESTS ARE SAYING...

“Really lovely cottage within easy walk of a lovely wine bar, fish restaurants and cinema and also close enough to walk to Mousehole and Penzance. Beautiful coastal walks a short drive away. We had a wonderful holiday!”

Tina – October 2023

“The location was great. The kitchen was particularly well equipped and the bed (in the main bedroom) was comfortable. Lots of nice touches throughout, including the complimentary scones, and other decorative additions that did not go unnoticed. Thanks v much!”

Beth – September 2023

“We have just enjoyed a lovely week-long stay at the Fisherman’s cottage. It was just as we expected. Lovely and clean. Bedding and towels great. The car park is very close by and very reasonable for a one-week pass. It is a quirky little place with a fabulous garden room with ocean views and a lovely decked area. Easy walk into Penzance and well served by local buses we hardly used the car all week. Facilities at the cottage were excellent. Everything was very well organised for our stay and we found the information file to be very useful. Thank you”

Alison- August 2023

“Not sure if I can even do this place any justice in a review. Let me start however by saying we felt extremely lucky and a little smug to have stayed at this incredible house. It has everything you could want, need and dream of. Spotlessly clean too! The highlight… which is a hard choice to make… was the sun room where you can spend days looking at boats and stars, have a little glass of wine and really just escape everything else. So stylish, with some many quirky and fun details…I would have designed my home like this had I had the skills! The weather didn’t hold out for us, but it didn’t matter when we had this little palace to snuggle in, instead. We will return… can we come tomorrow? X”

Marco – August 2023

“Beautiful house and location. Lots of lovely details in the house and an amazing view. Had a lovely stay.”
